TROBI will check and confirm that these are or are not, champions. Many hundreds of trees from all over the country are registered each year. TROBI, Tree Register of the British Isles, is the organisation responsible for declaring trees, champions. Even a dwarf tree can be a champion if its height exceeds all others in the UK of that variety. ![]() A champion is in essence the biggest example of that species of tree in the country and this can be height or girth or both. I would imagine that most people will think that a champion tree must be a huge colossus of a tree, bigger than all the rest, but this isn’t necessarily the case. The beautiful flaking bark is a distinct feature when young, but mature trees have a more glossy, strongly cinnamon coloured bark. ![]() Although these are becoming popular for winter garden displays in the UK, in it's native China, this endemic, decorative tree is becoming endangered due to habitat loss and extensive foresting. Specific epithet comes from the Latin word griseus meaning gray in reference to color of the leaf undersides.Whilst this isn’t a Champion Tree, this is a beautiful example of the Chinese Paperbark Maple, Acer griseum. One such tree is Acer griseum, the Chinese paperbark maple, which has the added advantage of being attractive all year round: in spring, when the leaves appear, in autumn when its wonderful, rich. Acer griseum (Franch.) Pax (Dicotyledoneae: Aceraceae) is an endemic species in China, distributed in Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Sichuan provinces, at altitudes between 15 m (Wu and Peter, 2012). Fall color varies, typically ranging from showy shades of orange and red to less spectacular shades of reddish-green to bronze green. Leaves are green above, but frosty blue-green to gray-green with fine hairs beneath. Each trifoliate leaf (3-5” long) features three coarsely toothed leaflets, with the middle leaflet being short-stalked. Bark on the trunk and limbs is extremely ornamental because it peels into large curls which remain on the tree rather that falling to the ground, often in attractive contrast to the tan to rose-brown inner bark. It is native to mixed forests in central China. It typically matures to 20-30 (40)’ tall. It is particularly noted for its exfoliating copper orange to cinnamon reddish/brown bark and its showy orange to red fall color. Acer griseum, commonly called paperbark maple, is a small, deciduous, oval to oval-rounded tree with slender upright branching. ![]()
